Virgil N. Swift,
Director Emeritus
Virgil N. Swift was vice chairman of the Board of Directors of Swift Energy
Company from the time the Company became a public entity in
1981 until he retired from the board on May 10, 2005. He also was chairman of the Board
of Directors of the Company's wholly owned subsidiary
Swift Energy International, Inc., from the time of its
formation in 1995 until May 10, 2005. Upon his retirement from these positions, he
became a director emeritus providing advice and counsel to the Board as requested.
Mr. Swift had retired as an officer and employee of Swift Energy Company
on June 30, 2000, but continued to provide consulting services focusing on the
development of the Company's Rimu/Kauri Area in New Zealand. During his years at Swift Energy Company, Mr. Swift served as
vice president of drilling and production (1981-1982), as executive vice president and
chief operating officer (1982-1991), and as executive vice
president for business development (1991-2000). He was also president and
chief executive officer of Swift Energy International,
Inc. (1995-2000).
Before joining Swift Energy, Mr. Swift spent 28 years with Gulf Oil
Corporation in various managerial positions in drilling and production, the last as
general manager of drilling for Gulf Canada Resources Inc. He was manager of producing
fields in the western United States, the Gulf of Mexico, and the Canadian Arctic. He also
represented Gulf in the countries of Kuwait, Spain, Denmark and Great Britain (for North
Sea field development), India (for the Bombay High Offshore Field Development Plan),
Russia (on a corporate team on science and technology), Venezuela (for the operation and
safety of compressor stations), and China (on a corporate team studying potential joint
ventures).
Mr. Swift graduated with a bachelor of science degree in petroleum
engineering from the University of Tulsa where he was inducted into the College of
Engineering and Applied Sciences Hall of Fame in 1996. He is a registered professional
engineer in Texas and Louisiana. He is also a member and former
sectional chairman of the Society of Petroleum Engineers, as well as a former member of
the editorial Review Committee on Offshore and Arctic Technology for the society's Journal
of Petroleum Technology.
Along with his brother A. Earl Swift, chairman of the Board of Directors of Swift Energy, Mr. Swift represents the third generation of the Swift
family in the oil and gas industry.
